Attendance Secretary

Attendance is very important for all our students-not only for their daily learning but also for our funding from the state. When your student misses school, they miss out!  

 

What to do when Absent?

Parents may either call in a Student's absence or write a note when they return to school. Students need to go to the attendance window in the morning with their note and get an admit back to class.

 

What if a student needs to leave?

When leaving from school, students need to either bring a note to check out or have a parent call before they leave (we have a closed campus) When in doubt-ask! 

 

My student participates in sports.  What do I need to know if he/she is absent?

On game days,or Friday before a weekend game, athletes must be in attendance all day or will be ineligible to participate in their sport. Exceptions are excusible appointments that are verified by the administration/athletic director.

English 10 is a literature course that focuses on teaching universal themes across a variety of genres and cultures.  Students will hone their skills in reading; (comprehension, word analysis, and interpretation) in writing; (analytical, persuasive, and comparison essays) with developed ideas, strong thesis statements and essay coherency, and in listening/speaking skills (formal and informal speeches, discussion, and oral vocabulary usage This course will emphasize the improvement of the student’s writing skills; to this end, each student will write approximately 8 – 13 essays in the course of the school year.  The goal is to prepare students to meet as many of the state’s 10th grade English state standards as possible.

Math Analysis

Math Analysis is the study of functions, statistics and trigonometry, with an emphasis on problem solving and applications. This course will help prepare you for pre-calculus, calculus and other college math courses.  In addition, the course will include a review of previous high school material, such as Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II in order to prepare students for the Summative High School STAR Test and college entrance exams.

I have seventeen years of teaching experience at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  I have taught science for sixteen of those years and look forward to another here at CLHS.

 

Course Title: Life Science

Grade Level:    9 - 12

Prerequisites:   None

Description:

A basic course that meets the state high school graduation requirements for Life Science but does not satisfy college entrance requirements for a laboratory science.  Most of the subject areas covered in Biology will be reviewed, meeting the standards of the California Science Framework.  Students of Life Science enjoy two semesters of animal dissections, cell microscopy, greenhouse projects, environmental work, and laboratory experiments as recommended by the state of California.  Students of Life Science will participate in four hours of out of class activities, environmental work, and green house projects per semester.

 

Course Title: Biology 

Grade Level:   9 - 12

Prerequisites:   None

Description:

A college preparatory class that satisfies university and college requirements as a laboratory science class and meets the standards of the California Science framework.  Students of Biology are exposed to a variety of topics in the life sciences, from microbiology and genetics to human physiology and ecology, culminating in an end of coarse exam required by the state of California.  Biology students will participate in four hours per semester of out of class activities, environmental work, and green house projects.

 

Course Title: AP Biology 

Grade Level:    11 - 12

Prerequisites:   "B" or better in Biology AND Chemistry 1

Description:

The AP Biology class is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology class taken by students after successful completion of a first year course in biology and chemistry. Students of AP Biology are challenged with a rigorous course encompassing five biological sciences in two semesters.  The course is divided unevenly into lecture, laboratory, and research work.  These students are expected to successfully complete twelve nationally recommended laboratory exercises focusing on biochemical, genetic, evolutionary, and ecological concepts.  They are also assessed with an end of course exam provided by the College Board, which may qualify them for college credit.  Out of class activities for this course include environmental and laboratory course work, stream and lake water monitoring, laboratory work at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, and a BioForum lecture series organized by the California Academy of Sciences and the UC Museum of Paleontology on the Berkeley campus. End-of-course tutorials will be offered in April to prepare for the College Board exam.  Students will be expected to participate in these activities and should consider these course requirements when enrolling in AP Biology.

 

The Science Department at CLHS sponsors a biannual Science Fair to be scheduled late in spring.  Students of science are expected to participate for extra credit.

At Clear Lake High School we realize that computers and technology are a crucial part of life.  The students at CLHS are introduced to technology in three stages:

 

Stage ONE: Beginning Computers

Stage TWO: Advanced Computers

Stage THREE: Professional Computers

 

Clear Lake High school also offers a course in the study of Current Events and Law.  Thorugh this course students are actively engaged in the current events of the world and locally.  Students are also engaged in learning about the process of the law through interactive learning, including a mock-student run Supreme Court.

 

About Mr. Evans

The instructor of these courses, Adam Evans has been teaching full time for seven years. Mr. Evans is a graduate of the University of Phoenix and holds a MBA with a minor is Marketing and Advertising.  Mr. Evans also has ten years of work experience in the technology, retail and the managment sector.

Concert Band, Jazz Band, Recording Technology

Concert Band boasts the largest high school band in all of Lake County.  We have earned numerous awards not only in the Concert Band setting but for Marching Band as well.  Last year we earned the highest rating possible, unanimous superior, at the CMEA Chico Band Festival in Sight-Reading.  

 

Jazz Band plays numerous styles of music from swing to Latin to rock.  Its members are the most advanced and dedicated musicians.  The Jazz Band has been recognized at numerous festivals along with individual members receiving solo awards in competition.

 

Recording Technology is an independent study course that teaches students about recording, composing, arranging, sound engineering, and light engineering.

I have been teaching 5-12th graders band at Terrace Middle School and Clear Lake High School for the past 4 years, and prior to that I taught at Lower Lake High School for 3 years.  I graduated from University of Arizona in the Spring of 2004 with my Bachelors of Music in Instrumental Music Education.

Inside the gym walls and roaming the athletic fields you can find PE Teachers: Milo Meyer and Miss Goff.   Both teachers offer PE courses that are designed to teach the basic skills and strategies for individual and team sports offering students the opportunity to specialize in an activity to help maintain a lifelong healthy lifestyle. By completing all requirements of this course students will receive PE credit towards the mandatory two-year requirement to graduate.  This course can satisfy a wide range of needs, provide new experiences, and better your future by: Increasing your fitness level through activities involving cardio, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, agility, and coordination.

   World History-The Modern World   

   In this course students examine major turning points in the shaping of        

   the modern world, from the late eighteenth century to the present.

 

Grade Twelve -

Principles of American Democracy (One Semester)

   In this course students apply knowledge gained in previous years of study    

   to pursue a deeper understanding of the institutions of American 

   government. This course should be viewed as the culmination of the civic    

   literacy strand that prepares students to vote, to reflect on the 

   responsibilities of citizenship, and to participate in community activities. 

 

Economics (One Semester) 

   In a one-semester course in economics, students should deepen their    

   understanding of the economic problems and institutions of the 

   nation and world in which they live. This course primarily is a course in  

   social science, enriching students’ understanding of the operations and  

   institutions of economic systems, rather than a course in household or 

   business management or budgeting.

Class Goal

The goal of the US  and World History classes is to inspire students to learn and to CARE about human History.

 

Knowing that history class is not the one the average person looks forward to I do my best to make the class engaging and interactive.  In my classes no one has to keep a failing grade on an assignment or test unless they were caught cheating or did not ever do it.  Please ask me how this works.

 

Each unit concludes with a project of the student's choice.  Project choices include but are not limited to: Collages, preparing food from the time studied, diary entries, composing original songs or skits about the subjects or people in the unit, mobiles, comic strips that illustrate the ideas or events of the unit and so much more.

World Geography and Social Studies Concepts is a class that builds a bridge between the history students learned in Middle School with the courses they will take their last three years in High School.   We not only cover relevant geography but also the concepts that will be a part of the curriculum in World and US History as well as Government and Economics.

 

Students in this class keep an interactive notebook.  The notebook is checked a few times throughout the semester and is due at the end of the semester. There are several projects in this class and there is a final which covers the vocabulary as well as local and global geography.

English III, AP Language/Composition, ELD

JUNIOR ENGLISH is a yearlong, rigorous, college prep class that will give students the skills needed to be successful in Senior English. Students will concentrate on the purpose and function of language, both in critical reading and effective writing, as they follow the Common Core Standards.

 

AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION is a yearlong, rigorous, college-level course which gives students the skills needed to pass the AP test in May and to be successful when entering college English.   With a focus on rhetoric, students concentrate on the purpose and function of language, both in critical reading and effective writing.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD) The goal of the ELD class is to enable limited English speaking students to become competent in comprehension, speaking, reading, and composition of English. This class emphasizes the mastery of English language skills.
